Holy Trinity Catholic Church

Dedicated by Bishop John Fitzmaurice on December 6th, 1903, Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church became the heart and soul of its Erie Pennsylvania Catholic Community.

Because funds were low Holy Trinity purchased St. John the Baptist church after that parish had built a new church. They paid $500 and moved it from its original location to one of 6 lots that they had purchased for their new parish. With great foresight, they placed it upon a stone foundation having left room for the news church they eventually planned to build. That church was built 38 years later.

In keeping with the sacred tradition of educating children, the parish built and maintained a school for over 85 years, until it was forced to close in 1995. The original school was built in 1904 and was used until 1910 when it became obvious that due to parish growth a new school building was necessary. The Felician sisters from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Province in Buffalo, New York were invited to staff the school as administrators and teachers. They would continue in this capacity until the school closed.

Because a Catholic education is considered a top priority at Holy Trinity, parishioners got together after the schools closing and formed the Parish Catholic Education Program. This is a unique program in several respects. For starters, it pays a large part of the tuition. Then, the family is free to choose the Catholic school of its choice. Next there is tuition assistance given to attend not only elementary school but also high school and a Catholic college as well. However the most unique is that the PCEP program is entirely funded by the efforts of the families involved in the program. This is an outstanding example not only of commitment to education but to the importance of Gods place in the lives of the parishioners. It is an example to us all.
